They assigned different models different pre-fixes. That is why Ruger went to the Digit pre-fix serial number system.

It was stated in that act that no two guns that a manufacture made could have the same serial number. Now I bet that no one has ever seen a Super Single-Six in the 600,000 and 700,000 range and the reason is because of the Gun Control Act of 1968. Now for the Single-Six, Ruger jumped from 499,000 to 800,000 because in 1964 when Ruger came out with their Super Single-Six, they assigned the serial number ranges of 500,000, 600,000, and 700,000 for that model. So as you can see, Ruger did indeed set aside serial number blocks for different guns. The numbers from 30,000 to 69,000 were filled with standard autos. The next range for the MK-Is jumped from 29999 to serial number 70,000. Their Standard auto jumped from 24999 to 30000. They set aside serial number range for their MK-Is from serial number 25000 to 29999. One example was their Mark I and Standard autos. Ruger from the very beginning set aside serial number blocks for different models and barrel lengths for their guns. Why did Ruger jump so many serial numbers on their Single-Six.
